In science we asked ourselves "What do seeds need to grow?" After brainstorming the question we decided to conduct an experiment. We came up with heat, light, water and soil. We decided to use cress seeds and this is the layout of our experiment:-
Test 1: Everything
Test 2: Everything except light
Test 3: Everything except water
Test 4: Everything except soil - we grew the seeds on some kitchen tissue
Test 5: Everything except heat - we put the pot in the fridge
From the photos below we came to the conclusion that seeds need water and light (heat).

Today we visited Lough Gur with Geoff Hunt. We brought fishing nets and collected lots of underwater creatures to bring back to the school to examine. We also looked out for bird life on and around the lake. We spotted mute swans, herons, moorhens and mallards.
When we got back to the classroom we discussed what we had found and seen. We looked at the underwater creatures under a microscope and drew a picture of a mallard.

Tuesday March 8th - What material makes the best parachute?
Today Mark did a science lesson with us where we investigated what would make the best material for a parachute. We also investigated whether the size of the parachute mattered. We investigated J-Cloth, Paper and plastic.
We came to the conclusion that the plastic was best and that the larger the sheet, the better.

Wednesday Nov 10th - Science Week: Walking Rainbows
We investigated how water can travel up through a kitchen tissue by a process called capilliary action . This is where liquids can move up through narrow spaces working against the force of gravity.
We used the primary colours - red, blue and yellow and saw that when mixed they formed the secondary colours green, orange and purple.

Are you brave enough to sit under an upturned glass of water with only a piece of card over the mouth of the glass?
Thanks to our brave "volunteers" who took the chance.
You may not feel it but the weight of the air all around us is pushing in every direction. This is called "Air Pressure". The air pressure pushes up on the card from underneath, creating a force that is strong enough to hold the water in the glass. Hopefully!

Wednesday 19th October 2021 - Science - Separating Colours
Last week in science we looked at what happens when you mix different coloured paints.
Today we looked at how to separate colours by hanging filter papers with a line drawn with a coloured marker on them into water. The water moves up through the filter paper. There are different pigments (colours) in the ink in coloured markers. These pigments are different sizes and weights and get carried at different speeds by the water, causing them to separate out. This is a process called CHROMATOGRAPHY.

This week is Space Week and we have been doing lots of space related classes. We looked up these space related words for our Word of the Day (meteor, orbit, solar, crater) and wrote a sentence with each of the words
In history we learnt about women in space - Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space, Sally Ride was the first American woman in space and we are hoping that Dr Norah Patten will be the first Irish woman in space.
Blackrock Castle Observatory sent us our very own unique photo of the moon - you can see this below.

In Science we investigated how the size and speed of a meteor effects crater formation. We made meteors of different sizes from Play-Doh to investigate the size effect. We meteors of the same size from Play-Doh and dropped them from different heights to investigate the speed effect. You can see that meteor number 4 which was dropped from the highest point made the deepest crates in the photo to the right. |
In Science/Art we discussed the design of an astronaut's suit. We decided the most important things were that it had to keep you warm and you would also need a supply of oxygen just like a deep sea diver. Then we made our own space suits which you can see below

- Did you know that the smallest bones are in your ear. They are called the hammer, anvil and stirrup and the three of them could fit on the tip of your little finger.
- The longest bone is your thigh bone and it is known as the femur.
- Over half the bones in you body are in your hands and feet.
- By weight, bone is stronger than steel.
We made our own cotton bud skeletons in art today.
