One of the most enjoyable things during the shutdown has been that we have time to observe the changes in nature all around us. The wild animals seem to be enjoying it also and visiting our homes. Here are three examples just from the last week.

Did you know Ireland has a species of lizard that is native to our country? The Vivipara or Common Lizard lives in coastal areas, bogland, mountains and even gardens! Sightings are very rare but this morning George in Junior Infants found one! George and his Mam Karen called the Irish Wildlife Trust because the lizard they found is very small, it's only a baby! Thanks to George for sharing his fascinating find!

Tomorrow is May Day and there are lots of traditions around May Day in Ireland. One of these is that people would decorate a hawthorn bush with flowers, ribbons and bits of cloth. This brought good luck to the house and its family in the year ahead. Here's a photo of the May Bush which Jessica in 1st Class decorated at home - she's going to have lots off good luck in the year ahead.

It's been an amazing few days for our first class pupil Rhys Scanlon. Rhys has been reading a story a day since we finished school and publishing these videos on his YouTube channel. He has read 40 stories to date. Rhys adds his own slant to these stories through actions, expression and adding in the odd tune on tin whistle or mandolin. You can find all these stories on YouTube by searching for Rhys Scanlon. Then, yesterday, Rhys was interviewed on radio by Joe Nash on Limerick's 95FM. Have a listen to the interview here. https://play.acast.com/s/live-95-limerick-today-podcasts/21065298-aef3-4cec-83d5-a31190042b91 As if that wasn't enough, one of the pieces Rhys read was a poem called "Waiter, There's a Dog in my Soup". The poet is the very famous American Children's Poet Laureate, Kenn Nesbitt. Kenn heard about Rhys reading his poem and tweeted about it on his Twitter feed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SllsJYla-q4 |

On Sunday last Bishop Leahy read a statement regarding the impact of COVID-19 on Church services and sacraments. In this he says “As we move towards the end of April, an increasing number of parents are understandably asking – "what’s going to happen to the First Communion and Confirmation ceremonies?’. Clearly because of where we are now in this critical stage of the battle against COVID-19, we can certainly say they are not going to happen in April or May. But, after that? Like all others, we must adhere to public authorities and what advice they give regarding large public gatherings. So, right now, it is impossible for us to re-schedule First Communion and Confirmation. And this is also true for Baptisms and Weddings."
On Monday April 20th he issued a letter to all First Communicants. Your child may be sad at the postponement of the First Holy Communion until later. Please read this with your child.
Both these letters can be downloaded below.

.These activities were decided by the committee in the first term . They teach each class questions and answers and then ask questions in Irish after big lunch every day as pupils come back into their class rooms and have recorded some mini -lessons which can be found on the website under the Gaelbhratach tab . These activities for the month of March involve more time in the halla and less time in the classroom and we hope they will be very enjoyable.

It will take place on March 6th . The pupils from 2nd - 6th have been given assigned poems which they will recite individually. The poem for Juniors, Seniors and First is chosen by the class teacher. Each class has one poem per class. If parents wish to attend Féile charge €2 on the door. It will take place during school time and the times will be agreed the week of the competition. Although work began on these poems weeks ago there is a recording of the assigned poems on the Gaelbhratach section of the website.

It was lovely to have our grandparents visit our school for Grandparent's Day.
Fr Ryan performed a short service beforehand.
Afterwards, our grandparents visited our classrooms and viewed some of our work.
Finally they went to the staff room and had tea and goodies.
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit our school. This will be a special memory in our young lives and we hope that it will be a special memory for all our grandparents also.
See here for some photographs from the day.

1st and 2nd Classes have set up a bird feeding station outside their classroom window.
The birds have been "tweeting" each other like mad and we are getting lots of visitors to the station. Each day we record what different types of birds visit. So far we have seen robins, rooks, blue tits, chaffinches, goldfinches, blackbirds, great tits, blue tits and dunnocks.
Take a look here for some further photos.

Congratulations to all those who took part in or supported our charity fundraiser in aid of Bumbleance and Cenacalo Community when carol singing before Christmas. A total of €932.00 was raised and €466.00 lodged to each charity. The Bumbleance have already sent a card saying thank you to everyone for the effort put in. Although out of season now, here is a reminder of how the money was raised.

Friday Oct 11th 2019 - The Eagle has landed
As part of Space Week 2019, 1st and 2nd Class discussed what it would be like to live on the moon. We designed and made our own astronaut suits. These had to be able to withstand temperatures as high as 123 degrees Celsius and as low as -233 degrees Celsius. They had to be able to supply oxygen to breathe. We also had to figure out how we would cope with having very little gravity on the moon and what we would do to protect us from harmful rays from the sun as the moon has no protective atmosphere.
You can see some more moon related photos here.
